The purpose of this guide is to give you some basic information about our Pre-K1 program. Please review to learn more about what to expect from Pre-K1class at Daarul Uloom.
Our mission is to:
1. Develop the child’s ability to make decisions about what they are going to do and how they are going to do it, and to plan use of time and energy.
2. Develop the child’s self-discipline and their ability to identify personal goals and to pursue and complete self-chosen tasks.
3. Develop the child’s ability to work with other children and adults so that work done is a result of group planning, cooperative effort, and shared leadership.
4. Develop the child’s ability to use a variety of skills in the arts, physical movement, and knowledge of objects as a base of educational concepts.
5. Develop the child’s ability to express them self—to speak, write, dramatize, and graphically represent his experiences and communicate these experiences to others.
6. Develop the child’s ability to apply the reasoning capacity they had developed in a wide range of naturally occurring situations and with a variety of materials.
7. Develop the child’s spirit of inquiry and of openness to knowledge and the points of view of other people. (Develop creativity and self-starting skills)

Classroom Routine
· Names recognition
· Calendar activities, Weather chart
· Quran and Islamic study
· Language Arts and Math activities
· Structured Instruction Time: Children are always learning with everything they do; however, we will have some part of the day, which we work with certain skills. For example, children will be concentrating on the exposure to letters and the sounds they make. We will use many different ways to experience letters, sounds and vocabulary and also will be working with foundational skills like colors, shapes, opposites, and the use of language to express themselves. These are just a few of the things we will be covering.
· Story Time: Preschool children love to be read to and we do lots of it! Every day we will have a story or participate in activities relating to the story we have read.
· Center Time: This allows the students an opportunity to experience play areas and Learning Centers. While at these centers, students will use language and problem solving skills and learn how to work and cooperate with others. In summation, this may only look like play, but to a child, it is their work.

Behavior
Teamwork, mutual respect, social and communication skills are at the core of student’s success. We at Daarul Uloom instill these values in students from early age. We use positive reinforcement technique to help develop and manage student behavior.
One of the techniques that we will be using this academic year is the ‘How’s my day chart?’ to monitor student’s behavior. This chart consists of four faces representing student’s behavior for a given day as outlined below:
· Neutral face: This represents neutral state. We will start our day by assigning neutral face against all student names.
· Happy face: This face is awarded to students for a good behavior associated with teamwork, mutual respect, class behavior, attentiveness, etc.
· Sad face: This face serves as a warning to student to correct the behavior. If corrected, student will move back to neutral. Teacher will help student understand the issue and also assist student to take corrective action.
· Very sad face: Teacher will move student’s name to this category, if the student continues to be disruptive. Teacher will monitor the trend and engage parents as needed.
At the end of each school day, students in the ‘Happy face’ and ‘Neutral face’ category will be awarded a sticker. Please note that stickers are only provided to students who fall under ‘Happy face’ category. Students will get a price from teacher once they collect five stickers.
I will attach a student behavior chart inside each child’s folder to inform parents about their child’s progress. Remember behavioral training does not end at school. Parents should work along with teacher to reinforce positive behavior at home as well.
Newsletters
We will be publishing newsletter on teacher web (http://www.teacherweb.com) website most of the weeks on Friday (occasionally Sunday) informing you of our progress. I strongly encourage all parents to review the newsletter as it will keep you well informed on your child’s learning during the week and all upcoming events for the following weeks.
Attendance
School resumes at 8:00AM and ends at 3:15 PM. We will be keeping track of student’s attendance. Parents are to call before 8:00 AM if their child is sick or as soon as they can.
Tardiness
Repetitive tardiness affects your child’s academic performance and disrupts the class. For more information please refer to parent teacher handbook. Teachers are not responsible for the kid until you hand them over to the designated teacher.
Drop off/ Pick up
All students should be dropped off (circle) and picked up from the classroom. Parents and/ or guardians must accompany their children into the classroom any time between 7:45-8:00am. Pickup time is starting at 3:15pm. Alternative arrangements for pickup must be provided in writing. Please refer to the Student Handbook for further information regarding the late pick up policy.
Nutrition
In order for the students to perform to the best of their ability it is important for them to have good nutrition every day. Please make sure your child comes to school having eaten a balanced breakfast with not too much sugar. Their snack at school should also not be filled with sugar and should be just a small amount of food, not a whole meal. Lunch time should consist of good nutrition and should contain enough food for your child’s thinking energy to be restored for learning during the rest of the school day. Please discuss with your child the difference between a snack and a full meal so they will choose the right food at the right time of the school day. Please refrain from including microwavable food or messy food such as soup in your child’s lunch pack.
Bathroom break policy
Pre-K1 class provides an academic environment where all students must be toilet trained. Students that have frequent accidents are not considered toilet trained and will be sent home until they are completely trained. Students’ accident that involves a bowl movement will not be cleaned by the teachers or other staff. In that case we will call the parent to come to school for
cleaning and changing the child. We will make the child as much comfortable as possible until the parents can come.
Teachers will ask the students to take bathroom break before snack time, lunch time, and before nap. Students will get extra bathroom breaks whenever they ask for it.
Sleep Time
3 years old children need 10 to 12 hours of sleep per day. Sleep deprivation causes fatigue and negatively impacts learning. Please make sure that your child gets enough sleep.
Assessment
The Pre-k1 assessment is mostly based on the teacher’s daily observation in addition of the 3 comprehensive assessments during the school calendar:
· Baseline
· Middle of the year
· End of the year
Field Trips
A few field trips into the surrounding community will be enjoyed during the year. The teacher may request the presence of the parent on a field trip in order for the child to participate in the trip. Students must pay all required fees by the given deadline. The school may deny a student the privilege of a field trip or require a parent to accompany their child on a field trip due to discipline and/or safety concerns.
We also strive to have community workers visit our school. Please contact the teacher if you have a job or special interest that you could share with our students.
Parent Participation
Parents are expected to:
· Attend scheduled Parent-Teacher conferences twice during the school year
· Chaperone AT LEAST two field trips.
Parents are encouraged to:
· Assist students in the classroom as requested by the teacher
· Participate in activities, parties and outings as requested by the teacher
